Will Tesla Insurance Be Any Good?

Electric Cars, Tesla
To my great surprise, Tesla has announced their upcoming insurance package. It promises lower prices and an easier setup than other insurance firms. Will it be any good? What is Tesla Insurance? Shortly after Tesla made Tesla insurance publicly available, they took it offline again. Apparently, an algorithm which calculated the insurance costs failed, causing costs to be far higher than intended. A number of hours later, Tesla re-published the webpage and announced on Twitter that the service was back up, prompting users to recalculate their costs. ”A competitively priced insurance offering designed to provide Tesla owners with up to 20% lower rates, and in some cases as much as 30%.“Tesla Fortunately, users then reported savings in comparison to their previous quotes and their current insurance package. Tesla really seems…

Over-Automation: Tesla’s Largest Production Bottleneck.

Electric Cars, Tesla
Upon release of the Model 3, Tesla was all set for a speedy production ramp which would allow most owners to get their vehicles within a year or so. The plan was to have a production line full of automation. Here is the predicted production graph: As you're probably aware, Tesla failed to achieve their targets by a considerable margin, taking until July of 2018 to reach their 5k/week production target. Tesla's problem was over-automation, but why did they do it and how can automation be used productively? Model 3 Production Ramp According to this graph created by Bloomberg, the Model 3 production ramp was only consistent at at least 5k cars per week since early 2019/late 2017. Before then, certain weeks would hit 5k and other woul fall far…

Tesla achieves 400 000 miles on a single battery? Here’s how you can too:

Electric Cars, Tesla
Recently, information surfaced about a Tesla Model X which achieved 300,000 miles on its original battery since it was purchased in May 2016. Meanwhile, it only lost 12.6% of its original capacity. Just a few years ago, the longevity of a battery was considered a disadvantage of an electric car, it seems we’ve come a long way. Tesloop, the company who owns the fleet of high mileage Tesla’s doesn’t follow any particular battery charging rhythms in order to maintain capacity. Instead, they just do what’s best for them. Let’s explore how you can maintain such incredible battery health. Why Does Battery Health Matter Battery health can be measured a few different ways. In short, it’s the general condition of the battery pack and its modules. One method of measuring this…

Why do Tesla batteries not overheat? Tesla’s battery cooling system.

Electric Cars, Tesla
As you should know by now from examples like the Samsung Note 7, lithium ion batteries get hot. If they're not fitted with an appropriate cooling system and are not regulated in an effective manner, they can overheat, potentially causing lots of damage to both the car and all of the humans inside. When Tesla was developing the original roadster, they had issues keeping the batteries cool. Consequently, they developed an ingenious cooling system. Since very few other companies were making electric cars, Tesla was one of the first to pioneer these systems. Here's how they did it: Why do batteries need thermal regulation? As stated above, all lithium ion batteries need some form of thermal regulation. Predictably, the larger the battery the more heat it gives off, thus needing…

Are Tesla Superchargers Really Under Attack?

Are Tesla Superchargers Really Under Attack?

Tesla
It's only a matter of time that someone, some organisation, or some government would attempt to change the network of Tesla Superchargers. Recently, the NY government have been 'attacking' the Tesla superchargers, pressuring Tesla to make them open to the entire community of electric vehicles. What Do I Mean by 'Attack'? When I say 'attack' in this context, I don't mean physical attack. That being said, owners of internal combustion engine vehicles commonly park in the Tesla Superchargers, stopping Tesla owners from using them. Although some people are genuinely clueless, many people park there due to their hatred for electric vehicles. Additionally, companies may use it as an advertisment campaign. Audi blocking a Tesla Supercharger Anyway, what I mean by 'attack' is more of an attack on Tesla, pressuring them…

Tesla Megapack: A New Untapped Market?

Sustainable Energy, Tesla
(July 31st) Yesterday, Tesla announced its latest product in their rather underrepresented energy storage sector. It's called Megapack and it's incredible; here's why: Tesla Energy When most people think of Tesla, they think of cars, perhaps the Model 3, S or X. However, what they don't realise is that Telsa is much broader than purely a vehicle hardware company. In fact, they can easily be categorised into three main markets: Energy (generation and storage)TechnologyVehicle Hardware Megapack fits into the energy sector, specifically the energy storage sector. Due to the nature of Tesla, the Megapack will be filled with futuristic technology too, but this is mainly a hardware project. Back when Tesla was founded, when they were trying to retrofit a Lotus Elise with batteries, one of the main problems they…
